RAPP Center becomes RAPP Collaboratory

In fall 2015, the Ruhr Astroparticle and Plasma Physics Center (RAPP center) was founded in order to combine research efforts within the fields of plasma- and particle-astrophysics in the Ruhr area.
The three universities Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Technische Universität Dortmund, and Universität Duisbug/Essen are located within a radius of 20 kilometers, enabling close collaboration between the universities. Founding PIs of the RAPP center were Prof. Wurm (Duisburg-Essen), Professors Dettmar, Schlickeiser, and Tjus (all Bochum), as well as Professors Rhode and Spaan† (both Dortmund).
The idea was to gather 80 researchers in the Ruhr Area, from master’s level up to staff members, to join forces to investigate fundamental physics questions and to break new ground by combining knowledge from the fields of plasma-, particle- and astrophysics.

In fall 2025, we celebrate 10 years of RAPP together with the extension of the RAPP Center toward a RAPP Collaboratory of the UAR.
We want to acknowledge the great progress that has been made by establishing collaborative programs under the RAPP umbrella, among others SFB1491 as a flagship project, on the topic of “Cosmic Interacting Matters – From Source to Signal”.
The 10-year celebration goes hand in hand with the extension of the RAPP Center to become a RAPP Collaboratory, implying the extension of the research center to also build a platform for common teaching and outreach activities, as well as extending the scientific portfolio toward laboratory plasmas and artificial intelligence.
