The main observables in the study of ultra-high energy cosmic rays are their arrival direction distribution, diffuse spectrum and composition. I will summarise the insights that arise from the study of the spectrum and composition, and show that these are seemingly in contradiction with the insights we obtain from the latest skymap of ultra-high energy arrival directions.
