The SFB1491 “Cosmic Interacting Matters – From Source to Signal” was founded in January 2022 and works on enhancing the understanding of energy transfer between the gas, magnetic field, cosmic rays, and dark matter in galaxies. 

The third general assembly of CIM in June 2024 will  also foster our discussions to prepare the follow-up proposal . 

We will have presentations of the different sub-projects, and overview talks on related topics by external experts.

18 Insights on the sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and high-energy neutrinos

The main observables in the study of ultra-high energy cosmic rays are their arrival direction distribution, diffuse spectrum and composition. I will summarise the insights that arise from the study of the spectrum and composition, and show that these are seemingly in contradiction with the insights we obtain from the latest skymap of ultra-high energy arrival directions. I will then discuss the possible role of active galactic nuclei and tidal-disruption events as sources of high-energy neutrinos, and outline a strategy towards predictive models of neutrino production in these environments.
